IPL Is Not a Sponsorship. It Is Where Indian FMCG Brands Buy National Legitimacy in Six Weeks.

IPL

There is no media property in India that delivers what IPL delivers.

200 million simultaneous viewers across JioCinema’s free stream and Star Sports’ broadcast. An audience that spans gender, geography, and income: urban, rural, north, south, 18 to 55. And the context is live cricket, the highest-attention content format in the country, where ad breaks are watched rather than skipped because the consumer is emotionally invested in what is happening on screen.

For an FMCG brand trying to establish national credibility quickly, IPL is not marketing spend. It is infrastructure spend.

Reliance used IPL 2025 to give Campa Cola the national launch it needed. The brand had the ₹10 price point and the distribution. What it lacked was the signal to consumers outside the regions where it was already present that this was a real national brand, not a local challenger. IPL provided that signal in six weeks.

The formula is now established. Regional brand going national? IPL. Challenger brand needing to establish legitimacy against a multinational? IPL. D2C brand needing offline consumer awareness without the cost structure of mass TV? IPL.

The risk is the same as any high-reach platform: attention without a clear narrative is just noise. The brands that convert IPL awareness into brand loyalty are the ones that knew exactly what they stood for before they bought the spot.

The Amul Girl has been India’s most cost-efficient awareness vehicle for 60 years because topical content earns attention that paid media has to purchase. IPL is the broadcast version of the same logic: be in the room when India is paying attention.

boAt signed Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, and Diljit Dosanjh not for reach but for positioning. The brand needed to be seen with a specific type of person before its ₹999 earphone could command the aspirational premium it was asking for. IPL puts a brand next to those same people in a context of national aspiration.

The Zepto story confirms it: a brand with a specific and testable promise uses high-reach platforms to find the consumer who needs to hear that promise once and will remember it every time they open the app at 9pm needing milk.

IPL does not build brands. It accelerates brands that are already built.
