CavinKare, the company that invented the 50-paise shampoo sachet and gave Hindustan Lever a sleepless decade, just acquired Polka Pop, India's clean-label zero-sugar sparkling water brand, without disclosing a single rupee of the deal.
Founded in 2021 by Gaurav Khemka and Shubham Modi, Polka Pop sells naturally flavoured sparkling water with zero sugar and zero calories across quick-commerce platforms. CavinKare absorbed it into its existing beverages portfolio, which already includes fruit drink brand Maa, on 25 September 2026. No financial terms were released, which is itself a signal: this was about category access, not a headline number.
CavinKare's power comes from its mass-market DNA. Chik shampoo sachets at 50 paise reshaped rural India's consumption habits and, by 2003, had given Chik a 22% national shampoo market share. That same DNA, the instinct to serve the bottom of the pyramid, is precisely the problem when you want to sell sparkling water at a premium to urban, health-conscious millennials. The brand recall simply does not stretch. A CavinKare-branded sparkling water would be met with suspicion in exactly the segment Polka Pop has already won.
This is the acquisition-as-identity-surgery model. When a brand's equity is built on price disruption, any premium extension under that same name risks corrupting both ends. The solution is not a sub-brand. It is buying a brand that already owns the territory you want, then running it separately. ITC did it with Yoga Bar. HUL did it with Minimalist. CavinKare just did it with Polka Pop.
Sometimes the strongest thing a legacy brand can do is admit that its own name is the problem.
